The convergence of foreign trade is not among the prerequisites for joining the European Monetary Union, but it could be understood as a very credible indicator of homogeneity of national economies. The previous research indicates high degree of the territorial structure compatibility across the EU-member countries however the commodity compatibility is not so strong. The impact of foreign trade on currency areas was firstly analyzed by Kenen and McKinnon. They justified the high degree of foreign tradediversification to diminish the consequences of negative macroeconomic shocks. On the other hand, Krugman argued that economic integration will encourage the national specialization under the assumption of relatively low transport cost and thus according to Kenen's conclusions the impact of asymmetric shocks might be increased.
