Age structure and the productive population workload in EU countries

European Union gradually increased from original constituent 6 countries to present 27 member countries. According to statistical records, 492 964 961 inhabitants lived there as of 1 January 2006. Generally, it is possible to note that the present demographic development can be characterized by decreasing birth-rate and fertility, which becomes evident in worsening the age structure with respect to the development of other demographic indicators. In the presented paper, the development of age structureis monitored within the period 1996-2006. For this period, EUROSTAT published necessary data on its web pages (2007 is not complete). In a young generation up to 14 years, its proportion decreased from 18.1% in 1996 to 16.0% in 2006, in a productive population at the age of 15-64 years, the proportion did not virtually change (within the group, in younger a decline and in older an increase occurred).
