Frequency of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa in boars of various breeds
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of morphological defects of spermatozoa in boars of various breeds. A total of 1080 semen samples from 90 boars of Duroc, Czech Large White and Czech Landrace were analysed. The observation was performed from January to December 2017. Abnormalities of spermatozoa were evaluated microscopically from dyed native semen smears on glass slides. Pathologies were divided into groups according to defective part of sperm. The most frequent pathologies were observed in head, neck and tail. The frequency of acrosome or midpiece defects or detached heads did not exceed 2 %. However, frequencies of some types of morphological defects differed significantly among the breeds. The highest proportion of spermatozoa with defects in the neck was observed in Duroc pigs, the lowest in the Czech Large White boars. The Czech Landrace and Duroc breeds showed higher occurrence of tail abnormalities. On the contrary, semen of the Czech Large White boars contained the highest proportion of detached heads when compared to the other evaluated breeds. The results of this study document great differences among breeds, in occurrence of both morphologically abnormal spermatozoa and particular defects which significantly affect fertility of boars.
