The current situation of thoroughbred breeding in the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The article focuses on the evaluation of the situation of English Thoroughbred breeding in the Czech Republic. Entry data were provided by the Jockey Club ČR. Ten breeding seasons between the years 2009 and 2018 were analysed. Using the gained data, the main focus was to evaluate stallions and mares in breeding based on suffixes and the percentage in mating. It has been found out, that the number of foaled fillies was 8 - 15 % higher in years 2017 and 2018 when compared to the number of foaled colts. The highest number of foals was born in March and April. Within mated stallions' countries of origin, dominant suffixes were from Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, the US and France. Over the decade, the percentage of using stallions increased: Irish stallions (from 26 % to 33 %); German stallions (from 8 % to 15 %); as well as the percentage of stallions from the Great Britain (from 5 % to 21 %). The number of stallions bred in the Czech Republic was slowly decreasing from 2009 until 2018, falling from 6 to the number 0. On the contrary, when comparing the suffixes of mated mares, mares from Czech Republic prevailed to the great extent. In 2009, Czech mares made up 57 % of overal amount, while this percentage decreased by 17 % by the end of the decade. On the contrary, there was an increase of mares with suffix of Ireland (18 %), Poland (7 %), Germany (13 %), France (8 %) and Great Britain (8 %). Importing of foreign horses with high performance, mostly from Ireland and France, significantly influences breeding in the Czech Republic, as well as horses with this suffix are successful on the race track.
