Dogs may sometimes show problematic behaviours. Among the most undesirable for owners is dog bites to the face. Little is known about factors that may be associated with the human behaviour closely before face bites. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to examine whether the presence of the dog's owner, familiarity and location may affect the victim's behaviour before face bites. One hundred and thirty-two face bites were examined. Familiarity (P = 0.07), location (P = 0.06) and presence of the dog's owner (P = 0.07) had a nearly significant effect on the incidence of face bites when the victim put his/her face close to the dog's muzzle. In conclusion, familiarity, location and presence of owner may influence facial bites when the victim put his/her face close to the dog's muzzle.
