The present publication titled "Forests of the Carpathian Mountains in the Czech Republic" brings a unique and comprehensive view of the Moravian and Silesian part of the Carpathian Mountains. The main author, Professor Otakar Holuša, made use of the many years he spent working in the Carpathian region. In individual chapters, the text addresses all the aspects relating to the forest environment and forest management. The publication describes in detail the characteristics of the area in terms of geomorphology, geology, pedology, and hydrogeography. Other chapters depict the characteristic types of forest ecosystems in the Carpathian region using the units of the forest site classification system and describe the significant species of flora and fauna. There is a detailed description of the development of forest management in the region of the Carpathian Mountains illustrated on an example of two nature forest areas. From the historical point of view, the author does not forget to mention the significant persons in forestry that worked in the Carpathians and the history of the forest constructions. The publication addresses the contemporary forest management, whether forest management as such, forest transportation, or forest functions. It also encompasses the characteristics of large-scale and small-scale protected areas significant in terms of forestry. Finally, the authors emphasize the international significance of the Carpathians with respect to the international Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians.
