Mohelenská hadcová step má svoji minulost, současnost a musíme doufat, že i budoucnost. Pro vizi budoucnosti stepi je třeba poznat její historii, vycházet z ní a dokázat na ní navázat, a to v rámci širšího kontextu. Pro snahu o její uchování pro budoucí generace by bylo možno použít příměr s údržbou věže, která je výjimečná, ale není neměnná. Pro její přetrvání a udržení výjimečnosti je třeba opravovat poškozená místa. Vkládat do ní nové kameny, které jsou nezbytné pro zachování její výjimečnosti. Přitom často není jasné, který kámen je vhodný a jak vypadá. Není zřejmé, jak to bude vypadat bez něho a naopak, jak to bude vypadat, když bude nalezen a použit. Bude totiž záležet i na tom, kam bude vložen. Navíc tuto věž nikdo nestaví sám. Jsou i další, kteří hledají vhodný kámen, vhodnou dobu a místo kam by ho mohli umístit. Údržba se komplikuje i tím, že když se k ní přistoupí pozdě, potřebné kameny zpravidla vypadají jinak a je třeba je umístit na jiná místa. Proto je velice obtížné předpovídat, jak tato věž bude v budoucnosti vypadat právě proto, že není opravována jen jedním subjektem, ve stejnou dobu, a navíc neexistuje adekvátní vzor, kterým by se zúčastnění mohli řídit. Přesto je třeba neustále hledat optimální cestu k dosažení toho, aby její výjimečnosti byla zachována i v následujících letech. S historií stepi a zvolenou cestou k jejímu zachování, je třeba seznámit i co nejširší veřejnost. Jen tak je možno přeměnit běžného turistu ve vizionáře, který bude schopen si přítomnost promítnout do budoucnosti. A případně se stát složkou, která svými postoji a chováním přispěje ke zdárné budoucnosti stepi a tím i k utváření kulturnosti národa. Uvědomuji si, že už v době vydání této knihy bude mít řada čtenářů dojem, že v ní není vše, co by tam mělo být. Popřípadě, že to, co je v ní napsáno, by mohlo být formulováno lépe. V tom případě jsem tak mimoděk vytvořil prostor pro další badatele a spisovatele. Pokud je to váš případ, běžte do toho a tento prostor využijte. Pokud bude vaše bádání a doporučení z nich vyplývající exaktní, stepi to určitě prospěje. Pro doložení proměn, kterými Mohelenská hadcová step procházela a neustále prochází, má nezastupitelnou roli i fotodokumentace. Při revizi mojí fotografické databáze ze stepi jsem relativně nedávno zjistil, že v ní nemám svoji fotografii. A že by to nakonec mohlo vyznít tak, že jsem na stepi vlastně nikdy nebyl. Ve spolupráci s mojí kolegyní Balabánovou jsme to v poslední chvíli napravili a inkriminovanou fotografii zde pro jistotu zveřejňuji.

Transformations of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe

This monograph describes the characteristics of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe, the purpose for the protection of its habitat, and the preservation of its important representatives of flora and fauna. The focus is on the effort to use the steppe economically, emphasizing the role of grazing, both within the economic use of the steppe and in its protection. Furthermore, it examines the management of the care of the steppe and the subsequent strategies for the implementation of that protection. It also presents an overview of the individual practical steps taken for preservation during the period from 1945 to 2021, with the pre-1945 interventions provided in the monograph &quot;MoheIno Serpentine Steppe - history of the reservation and its research&quot; (VESELY, 2002). Subsequently, this monograph deals with documentation for the development of the steppe, taking into account the participation of the public, general negative affects upon the steppe, education, the accumulation of precise data, and the presentation of these factors at thematic conferences. The observable results of the current management are placed in the context of the historical development of the steppe, emphasizing the role of historical maps and photo documentation, and documenting the long-term development of the habitat. The management of the steppe preservation after 1995 is assessed within an international context. A substantial part of this monograph deals with the evaluation of the development of the biocenosis of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe after the interventions. The procedure for selecting the research areas, their characteristics, and their specific locations are presented. Attention was paid primarily to the height of the grassland vegetation. The monograph documents and evaluates the dynamics in the selected areas in 1995-2010. Another evaluated parameter was the botanical composition of the vegetation. This is followed by a section that presents the method used for recording the botanical composition of the vegetation and evaluating the influence of grazing on its composition. In this context, the assessment of the impact of grazing focused on the influence of the total number of species, including protected species, and on the different grazing techniques in the period from 1997-2008. The evaluation took into account changes found in individual years for the entire grazing area and changes detected in given time periods for the individual research areas (i.e., nine areas), especially in the spring and late summer. In this context, the work provides a graphic evaluation of changes in the composition of the grassland vegetation. The next section is devoted to grazing management and its impact on the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe habitat. A tabular overview shows sheep and goat grazing in 1997-2021. It contains the grazing area, the time period, the number of animals, and the type of grazing. This is followed by a description of the methods used to define the grazing area, its grazing load, and the evaluation of the grazing behavior of the animals (i.e., ethological grazing). Without the values obtained by the latter methods, it would not be possible to carry out an exact assessment of the impact of grazing on the steppe. The nutritional value of the grassland vegetation includes the influence of the soil composition on the plant communities. Possible influences for the content of mineral substances in the serpentine steppe vegetation, with attention paid to the accumulation of heavy metals within the plants, is studied along with the content of energy and organic nutrients in this vegetation. These interactions are discussed both in terms of global serpentine habitats and in the specific vegetation of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe. The possibility to predict the nutritional value of the serpentine steppe grasslands is also mentioned. Climatic factors that influence the habitat of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe, including the impact of the Dukovany-Dalešice energy system, are shown by the development of climatic conditions on the steppe, with diagrams for 1995-2020, and a comparison to optimal conditions for grassland growth. The final part of the monograph is devoted to important associated personalities and objects and photo documentation that maps the changes of the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe.
