Cocoa production is of great importance to the economies of most Sub-Saharan African countries. The cocoa sector in most of these countries has played a vital role in the socio-economic development from the time of the colonial rule till today. In most of these countries the sector employs about 60-70% of the agricultural work force. It is the main source of livelihood for most of the people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although sub-Saharan Africa produces about 70% of world total production of cocoa, barely18% is processed and total consumption of cocoa products is about 3.2%. The paper seeks to analyse the effects of the world cocoa prices on the supply and demand of cocoa and how it affects the livelihood of the cocoa farmers in Ghana and the Ghanaian economy as whole from 2000/2001 to 2008/2009 crop seasons. The analysis will use secondary data obtained from the International cocoa organization (ICCO), the World Bank the Ghana statistical service and the United Nations Food and Agricult
