The article presents the state of the water resources in the Republic of South Africa and the quality of drinking water in Amathole District. The writing deals with the contemporary state of South African water resources with regard to the aspects whichpotentially threaten the water resources and also explain the main challenges causing contamination. Important challenges of water quality in South Africa are salinity, water borne diseases, low oxygen levels, eutrophication, suspended solids, hydrocarbons, acidification, solid litter. Very comprehensive and useful data about water quality and management provides Blue Drop Certification Programme which has been prepared by the Department of Water Affairs since 2009. It is focused on tap water and provides integrated information about the quality of the tap water.
