Zoonoses (brucellosis, leptospirosis, rabies, toxoplasmosis, bovine tuberculosis and bovine cysticercosis) in Cuba: Situation during the years 2005-2015 and current risks

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean with its area of 109,884 km2 and more than 11 mil inhabitants. According to OIE (Office International des Epizooties, World Organisation for Animal Health) four zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans) were reported in humans during the years 2005-2015: brucellosis (261 patients without any death case), leptospirosis (2 722 patients with 211 death cases), rabies (three dead patients) and toxoplasmosis (351 patients with one death case). In domestic animals in Cuba six zoonotic diseases were reported in the same period: bovine tuberculosis (15 infected cattle herds/outbreaks; the last one was diagnosed in 2012), bovine cysticercosis (four cases in cattle), brucellosis in cattle (Brucella abortus; 275 infected cattle herds/outbreaks), brucellosis in pigs (Brucella suis; 40 infected pig herds/outbreaks) and rabies (604 infected animals, esp. dogs). Bovine tuberculosis and bovine brucellosis in particular are transmitted by raw milk and products made of milk which was not properly heated or pasteurised. In 2012 bovine tuberculosis was eliminated in cattle not only due to the systematic diagnostics, but also due to preventive measures consisting of obligatory milk pasteurisation implemented in purchased milk in the whole country. Other zoonotic diseases in humans and animals are prevented by vaccination (i.e. leptospirosis, rabies, and brucellosis) and other preventive measures.
