Aspects affecting the role of private forests in the Czech Republic

The paper deals with important changes in forestry in the Czech Republic. After 1989, the area of forests was redistributed in a process of restitutions between new owners at the expense of the state. In the course of the last thirteen years, the state returned about 38% of the forest area to private subjects, villages and municipalities. Owner changes brought a necessity to deal with the problem of effective and professional management, mainly on small areas. The state forest policy is aimed at supporting of sustainability, and enhancing the importance and functions of the forest by means of legislative and financial tools of management. The state supports unifying the private owners of small forests and properties into co-operative forms of management. It supports, financially, professional and advisory activities in private forests.
