Mentions of extensive damage to woody plants by animals may be found in forestry literature since its very beginning. Recurring damage to forests or forest regeneration process by cattle grazing and forest animals is discussed by Jan Evangelista Chadt (Ševětínský) in his "Dějiny lesů a lesnictví" (CHADT, 1914) . Thomas Miklitz repeatedly deals with damage by animals as a phenomenon in Zentralblatt für das gesamte Forstwesen (e.g. MIKLITZ, 1915). In the 20th century, damage by animals is an inseparable part of every book dedicated to forest protection. In literature, damage description is followed by the identification of causes and possible solutions. The book mentions changes in forest management leading to a reduction of food supply diversity and quantity and to an increase in the occurrence of other preconditions for damage, and a disproportionate, environmentally disrespectful increase in ungulate game numbers as well as insufficient interconnection (economic and factual) of huntin
