Unfavorable impacts of forwarder technology on tree root systems along skidding trails and possibilities of their prevention
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Passages of forwarders along skidding trails have several unfavorable impacts on Norway spruce root systems. The sites were characterized by medium-textured soil of the gley type under favourable moisture conditions. Damage to conducting systems of treeswe described earlier, here we focused on absorbing root surfaces in fine roots and on belowground damage to upper coarse root surfaces (especially covering tissues). It was found, that damage to fine roots is not crucial, because it remains local and such roots can regenerate. Damage to coarse roots is more serious, the wounds (smashed bark, phloem and young xylem) do not heal and tissue is opened for fungal infection, which can jeopardize the whole tree. Based on determined depth up to which the damages occur and detail description of root positioning we derived the minimum distance from stems, which the forwarders can approach and where roots are deep enough to be protected by the upper soil layer. This way we have got objective info
