Ancient Coppice Woodlands in the Czech Republic’s Landscape: A Case-Study
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Coppicing has gradually declined in recent decades in many European countries after centuries of increase. The Czech Republic is one such country with now only 7.5% of the coppice woodland area remaining when compared to the extent in the middle of the nineteenth century. Hundreds of years of traditional management and interactions between humans and landscapes in ancient coppice woodlands have resulted in man-made natural ecosystems with great natural and cultural-historical value. But many of their remnants face over-maturity, consequent felling, and replacement by high forests. Considering the number of remnants still unnoticed or at least unrecognised and often on the verge of extinction at the same time, it seems to be an appropriate moment to appraise their importance from diverse points of view.
