Safflower in world floriculture: a review

Safflower exploitation in horticulture has rapidly increased over the last twenty years. Currently, somewhere around twenty cultivars are grown for ornamental purposes, while over forty varieties have been offered and sub-sequently rejected in the last decade. In the year 2000, 35.2 million flowering stems were supplied to the Dutch flower auctions and the total value of sales in that year reached about Euro 5.3 million, so that safflower was ranked 39th among all cut flowers in terms of its commercialimportance. As the same time it was ranked 19th among imported cut flowers with a sales value of nearly Euro 2.6 million. However, from 2001 onwards european production and imports of safflower appear to have decreased. Spineless varieties of safflower are available as late cultivars, grown mainly outdoors for drying.
