A classification schedule for Canna lilies is proposed for evaluating the Canna genepool, with a view to facilitating the collecting, breeding, exchange of information and documentation of Canna lilies. This schedule contains 40 morphological descriptors, some phenological descriptors, and descriptors for evaluating the sensitivity of Canna cultivars to diseases, pests and other stress factors. Twenty hybrid varieties of Canna lilies and also some native species (C. iridiflora Ruiz. & Pav., C. compactaRoscoe and C. indica L., in three native varieties) were evaluated. Height of plants, sucker production and leaf number, as well as stem and leaf morphology, varied with the variety, but can be significantly influenced by planting dates, temperature, water availability and stage of plant development. In other traits, such as rhachis position or spathe and petal wax cuticle, no significant differences between varieties and/or native species have been recorded so far. Only flower character
