New apricot cultivars resistant against PPV from Czech republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
One of the major limiting factors of apricot production is the plum pox virus (PPV), the causal agent of Sharka disease. It is widespread in all major Prunus growing production centers except for New Zeland, Australia, California and south Africa. The most serious symptom in apricot is deformation of fruits, which makes them unmarketable. A conservative estimation of annual apricot fruit losses caused by PPV is around 0,6 million tonnes. Significant reduction in production areas and considerable economic loss stimulated researchers focus on study of PPV. After discovering apricot PPV resistant genotypes, breeding programs with the aim of production of PPV resistant cultivars have started. As a result of the breeding program at Department of Fruit Growing in Faculty of Horticulture, Mendel University in Brno (CZ) we offer four promising PPV resistant varieties with high market value of the fruits for practice growing. The degree of PPV resistance was tested during long term cooperation with Crop Research Institute Prague - Ruzyně (Czech Republic) and INRA (France). These varieties are now in the process of registration.
