In August 2006 bluetongue (BT) suddenly appeared in Northern Europe, and a BVT-8 serotype never occurring in Europe before was identified. In November 2007, BTV-8 was first detected in the Czech Republic. BT can be transmitted also to wild ruminants, andthe examination for BTV-8 presence in their populations was the aim of this study. Ten samples of blood and full blood (with EDTA) were collected from infected cattle coming from three herds in which the infection was first detected. Fifty-five blood samples from the Sika Deer, Red Deer, Roe Deer and Fallow Deer were provided by gamekeeper´s clubs. In addition, 104 serum samples were obtained from Veterinary Research Institute in Brno, and they came from the following species of free or captive wild ruminants: the Muflon, Fallow Deer, Red Deer, Dybowski´s Sika Deer, Pere David´s deer, Bezoar Goat and Dwarf Goat.
