Transabdominal ultrasound used in diagnostics of severe gastric glandular ulceration in a foal
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Transabdominal ultrasound is used as an additional diagnostic method in delayed gastric emptying syndrome in a horse. Duodenal but not gastric wall thickening is described in equine gastroduodenal ulcer disease. A 6-months-old Thoroughbred colt was presented with a history of acute colic. Long term history revealed frequent dorsal recumbency but no previous colic episodes. Intestinal strangulation was suspected and the foal was treated surgically. Large colon volvulus was found and corrected intraoperatively. Postoperatively the foal showed apathy, mild colic and bruxism. Transabdominal ultrasound revealed thickening of the stomach wall up to 3 cm. Gastroscopic examination confirmed multiple severe chronic ulceration of the glandular mucosa. Mucosal biopsy showed chronic inflammation and necrosis and bacteriologic examination was inconclusive. Treatment with omeprazol, sucralfate and doxycyklin was started and the foal was discharged with guarded prognosis. The owner reported that the
