Fourth branchial arch defect (4-BAD) is a term describing a syndrome of congenital defects, affecting that external structure of the larynx, which have a basis in the fourth branchial arch. Defective development is characterized by aplasia or hypoplasiaof some or all the structures derived from the fourth branchial arch. The defect may be unilateral or bilateral, but most cases are unilateral with the right side more affected. It was reported that this defect is more common in Thoroughbreds, warm-blooded and Haflinger, but cases of ponies have been documented as well.
