Sex determination in gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) with the use of cloacoscopy and ultrasonography.

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Sex recognition in Helodermatidae is challenging. Ultrasonography proved to be suitable method for sexing in monomorphic reptiles. Recently, non-invasive endoscopy (cloacoscopy) has been accepted as a practical tool for sexing in monomorphic reptiles. The aim of this study was to compare practical use of ultrasonography and cloacoscopy in sex determination in Gila monster. Two specimens A, B (4 years old, b.w. 380 and 400 g) were presented for sexing. After standard physical examination lizards were restricted manually and positioned in dorsal recumbence on an electric heating pad. Cloacoscopy was performed using a rigid endoscope (2,7 mm, 30°, 18 cm) with a working sheath. Continuous cloacal flushing with sterile saline cleaned the optic and enhanced visualization. In the urodeum of lizard A the central fold dividing urodeum in two small pouches has been observed. This fold has not been found in lizard B. Ultrasonography was performed with the use of Vivid 7 Dimension (Vingmed ultrasound A.S.) and linear probe (14 MHz). Lizards were restricted manually and hold in dorsal recumbence. Oval hypoechoic structures were present in coelomic cavity caudal to the liver in lizard A, while these structures have not been found in the lizard B. Based on results of two independent methods lizards were determined as female (A) and male (B). During the whole examination time lizards did not show any signs of distress. The ability to endoscopically and ultrasonographically image the ovaria in Gila monster may depend on the season and the age and health condition of the female.
