Assessment of ecosystem contamination in flooded areas of Moravia, Czech Republic during the period 1997 - 2001

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) indicator congeners were determined using high resolution gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detection (HRGC/ECD) in water and sediment samples collected in flooded areas of Moravia, CzechRepublic. Floods occured in the sampling areas during the years 1997 and 1998. The sampling sites were collected five times yearly in the same period of each year from 1997 until 2001. From each sampling site 6 samples were collected. This allowed the assessment and following comparison of contamination levels. Samples were extracted with non-polar and partly with polar solvents and cleaned using the solid phase extraction and column chromatography on a mixed column comprised of florisil and aluminium oxide. Separation by HRGC/ECD was carried out with two columns (Hewlett-Packard HP 5 and J W Scientific DB-MS) using the split/splitless technique with optimal temperature programme (Hewlett Packard HP 6890).
