Assessment of environmental risks from wastewater on the basis of direct toxicity tests and chemical analysis
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Wastewater contains different pollutants which may pose a serious risk to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. The assessment of environmental risks from pollutants in wastewater should be carried out not only on the basis of chemical analysis but it should also employ biological methods particularly ecotoxicological tests, which enable identification of a direct effect on the biotic systems. Using one carefully selected ecotoxicity test or a set of these tests one may reliably estimatepotential environmental risks. Technological processes used in the wastewater treatment in the Czech Republic markedly vary. In order to comply with EU standards on wastewater purification, the Czech Republic will have to address some issues concerningthe sewer system in settlements with less than 5,000 inhabitants. Furthermore, the majority of medium and large wastewater treatment plants will have to adopt technologies which employ biological methods to eliminate nutrients. The main aim
