Prevalence of Neospora caninum antibodies in donkeys from Italy
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In some European countries in the recent years there is an increasing interest on donkey due to the development of their use as pet animal, in leisure activities, for onotherapy (a new therapy/instrument in pet therapy) and especially for the rediscoveryof donkey milk as food source for children affected with cow milk allergy. Despite there are few data regarding the donkey's parasitic diseases especially those with a protozoal etiology as neosporosis. Two hundred and thirty eight donkeys from SouthernItaly were tested for serum antibodies to Neospora caninum. The donkeys were used for milk (n=183), for meat (n=16), for breeding (n=12) or as a pet animals (n=27). There were 219 females and 19 males of age ranging from one month to 24 years. The donkeys were of the following breeds: Martina Franca (n=53), Amiata (n=46), Sicilian-Grey (n=14), Ragusano (n=8), Sardinian (n=7) and 110 crossbreeds. Sera were tested by a competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for antibodie
