Investigation of the cruelty in newborn calf management of dairy herds in Sicily: some legal considerations
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The process of improvement of livestock production aims to maximize a farm's profits. In the rearing of high milk production dairy cows the increasing incidence of production costs on income has led farmers to make some changes in herd management. The importance of fertility characteristics in dairy cattle influences the farming typology. Milk production depends on an efficient frequency of births. In addition, an efficient reproduction program allows for greater choice among productive characteristics able to ensure higher genetic progress (increase of the intensity of selection) for the selected characteristics. The key activity of a dairy cattle farm is, therefore, calving, which both produces a new calf and enables the cow to enter in the milk production chain. Indeed, on these farms, the cow acquires greater economic importance for the farmer with the birth of a female calf. The birth of male calves is a disadvantage on dairy farms, and represents an economic loss for the farmer. For these reasons, the farmer does not register the male calf after the birth and frequently he kills or abandons it. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the existence of such injurious management towards male calves investigating some dairy cattle farms in the Ragusa province (Sicily, Italy) and carry out some legislative considerations.
