Stress of cattle during practical training at School farm
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The use of animals for research or teaching is a frequent topic in animal welfare and welfare discussions, but the relevant sources of information are limited. Non-invasive sampling was used to evaluate the stress. The aim was to determine whether there is an elevation of the stress hormone cortisol in practice, by determining its metabolite in feces. Sampling and practical training took place at the School farm of dairy cattle of University of Veterinary and Pharmacology Sciences Brno, Czech Republic. 18 Holstein breed dairy cows were selected from the stable section, where part of the block course Infectious Diseases and Legislation takes place. A total of 4 sampling per rectum were collected for each selected dairy cow. The first sampling took place in the evening before the practical training followed by a series of 8.5, 10.5 and 12.5 hour collections after the practical exercise. Feces samples were evaluated by ELISA. The resulting values were compared to the stress load with the maximum measured values, the difference was highly statistically significant (P < 0.01).
