Behavioral responses of shelter-housed dogs to management and legislative considerations
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Shelters are facilities used to temporarily house stray and abandoned dogs, while they are waiting to be adopted or returned to the owner. In Italy, the law defines the minimum structural requirements that these structures should have but does not include specifications related to the environmental enrichment and interactions with humans. A dog is a social animal, thus contact with people and with other dogs plays an important role. Furthermore, the environmental enrichment is useful to guarantee the comfort of dogs confined in the kennel. This study examined the behavior of sheltered dogs in response to an environmental change and the length of their stay in the shelter. Legislative considerations are also given. The behavior of sixty dogs sheltered in three Sicilian shelters, with varying structural requisites and different management, was recorded over a 6-h period (twice daily). It was observed that all significant behavioral alterations (i.e. anxiety, low level of sociability, etc.) were related to the length of the shelter stay and the dogs' age on entry. A shelter stay lasting over two years rendered the animals unsuitable for adoption. There were few interactions with humans, which explained the lack of sociability in dogs observed.
