Effects of transport stress and floor space reduction on selected biochemical indices in common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This study investigated stress effects encountered by hand-reared pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) during their transfer from intensive housing facilities to pheasantry. The effects of transport stress due to 4-hour crating and environmental changes on selected biochemical indices in pheasants were monitored in a group of 100 birds (50 males and 50 females) aged 9 weeks. The pheasants were transported by a covered lorry in crates with a total body weight of 12 +/- 0.5 kg in one crate (Group A - floor space: 290 cm(2)/kg) and with a total body weight of 18 +/- 0.5 kg in one crate (Group B - floor space: 195 cm2/kg). Immediately after transport, blood samples were taken from both the A and B group of birds (A1, B1) and then again 24 hours after transport(A2, B2). Plasma concentration of glucose, lactate, AST (aspartate aminotransferase), total protein, cholesterol and corticosterone were measured. When compared with the non-transported control group, both A1 and B1 pheasants exhibited a
