Utilisation of wild legumes for increasing species diversity of grassland.

Wild species of the family Fabaceae were evaluated as components of a grass seed mixture to increase species diversity in newly established grassland. In 2004, the trials were established in two sites in distinct climatic regions of the Czech Republic, at Troubsko and Zubří. From the germplasm collection 21 species were chosen - Trifolium alpestre, T. rubens, T. montanum, T. fragiferum, T. campestre, T. dubium, T. medium, Lathyrus sylvestris, L. tuberosus, Galega officinalis, Melilotus officinalis, Astragalus cicer, Astragalus excapus, Lotus uliginosus, Vicia pisiformis, V. villosa, V. cracca, V. tenuifolia, V. angustifolia, Lupinus polyphyllus and Medicago falcata. Fifty seeds of a single species were added to the grass seed mixture per experimental plot of 5 m2. Their occurrence was monitored over three years.
