The scholar and Czech Catholic priest Alois Musil (1868-1944) ranks among the greatest personalities of oriental studies. He started his career as a Bible scholar, and biblical exegetics was his original field. However, changes in Catholic exegetics at the time of the pontificate of Pius X forced him to concentrate on the much different, albeit less dangerous, field of oriental studies. The present study is devoted to the period of his studies at the École biblique (1895-1897) that ended in a rift witha dramatic aftermath. The reasons for the conflict between Musil and the director of the École biblique Marie-Joseph Lagrange are then clarified on the basis of freshly revealed documents.
