Der Beitrag reflektiert die vielfältigen Formen des Begriffes Heimat im gleichnamigen graphischen Roman „Heimat: ein deutsches Familienalbum“ von Nora Krug (1977, Karlsruhe). Krug ist eine deutsch-amerikanische Graphikerin und Autorin, lebt in Brooklyn und ist eine außerordentliche Professorin für Illustration an der renommierten Parsons School of Design in New York City.Nach ihrer Ankunft in Amerika, ihrem Studium, ihrer Heirat in eine jüdische Familie, recherchierte sie die Geschichte ihrer Familie im Zweiten Weltkrieg und zeichnete diese in ihrem Buch „Heimat“ nach, das aus dem Bedürfnis sowohl nach der neuen Aufarbeitung der Geschichte ihres Landes als auch nach einer neuen Aufarbeitung der Geschichte ihrer Familie entstand. Dabei setzte sich Krug mit verschieden Formen des Heimatbegriffes auseinandersetzen, um die Antwort auf ihre Frage zu finden: „Wie soll man verstehen, wer man ist, wenn man nicht versteht, woher man kommt?“ Im Hinblick auf die Geschichtsvermittlung wird gezeigt, wie die Formen des Reflexionsbegriffes Heimat ihrer Funktion folgen. Hervorgehoben werden dabei, die vier, von Gerhard Handschuh definierten, Dimensionen des Heimatbegriffes: die räumliche, soziale, kulturelle und die Zeit-Dimension.

Just as form follows function, so does the graphic novel form follow the story as Nora Krug reveals her own family’s past. Krug deals with different forms of the concept of home to answer the question: How do you know who you are, if you don’t understand where you come from? Forms of thereflective concept of homeland follow their function in Krug’s graphic novel, i. e. the graphic side is determined by the function to convey the past using a lot of documentary material. She answers what it means for her generation to be a German, who feels guilty about the events of the 20th century at home and abroad.
