This article examines the multifaceted and ambivalent role of the German Cultural Association (Deutscher Kulturverband, DKV), the largest school and cultural organization of the German minority in interwar Czechoslovakia. Founded in 1919 as the successor to the German School Association, the DKV developed into a central actor in the struggle to preserve German-language education. It operated within a field of tension between its declared loyalty to the Czechoslovak state and discreet connections to Berlin. Rooted in Prague's liberal academic milieu, the association pursued a moderate line, explicitly distancing itself from antisemitism and radical nationalism. At the same time, it maintained ties with the Verein für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA – Association for Germans Abroad) and benefited from covert financial transfers. The DKV followed a pragmatic strategy, relying on legal means to oppose school closures and deliberately avoiding open political confrontation. However, in the 1930s, it lost influence as the Sudeten German Party (SdP) rose to dominance. Despite intensive efforts to preserve its independence, the DKV lost its autonomy in 1937 during the process of Gleichschaltung (forced coordination), becoming the last major German organization in Czechoslovakia to be dissolved. Based on extensive archival sources, this study explores the DKV’s dual role as both a defender of minority rights and an instrument of power-political influence, revealing the fundamental tensions between educational activism, nationalism, and realpolitik in the contested arena of minority politics in East-Central Europe during the interwar period.
