The Global Competitiveness Report 2004-2005 published by the World Economic Forum raised relatively high attention amongst politicians, economists, as well as general public in the Czech Republic. Czech mass media commented mainly on the poor evaluationof our country from the point of view of the public institutions performance in general and especially excessive public spending. On the other hand they reported rather proudly on a very pleasant position of our national economy regarding the technological state-of-the-art. The authors of this article were in particular surprised by the Czech economy ranking because according to the technological subindex our economy was ranked directly next to the British one. We have been involved in the field of evaluation and adoption of advanced manufacturing technology for several years and we have made some interesting comparisons showing significant differences between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
