Elections in Mozambique in 2009: The Strengthening of the Ruling Party in the Process of Democratitization

This paper analyses the last Assembly of the Republic and the presidential elections in Mozambique in 2009. The fourth multi-party elections in Mozambique led to the strengthening of Frelimo, a political party which has ruled Mozambique during the wholeera of multi-party politics. In these elections Frelimo won the constitutional majority of seats which has strengthened Frelimo´s power in the Mozambican political system. These elections were the first since 1994 in which a third party entered the parliament. This paper discusses the main election characteristics such as the electoral system, party system, election campaigns, results and electoral support. The analysed data focuses on election results and electoral research. In the case of Mozambique,the topic of party dominance is also important, the special attention is paid to the personalistic vote in Mozambican elections as well.
