Politics of Words: Language and loyalty of Czech-speaking soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The chapter focuses on the way Czech-speaking members of the Austro-Hungarian military understood language as a symbolic battleground where their perceived interests were to be fought over with the authorities who, from the NCOs and junior officers up, increasingly relied on language as a way to differentiate between various groups of soldiers and to judge them by it. It aims to understand the relative importance language had in entrenching “Czech” collective identity among the Czech-speaking troops in the process which can be described as a creeping sense of alienation, with various authors reflecting on how – in their perception at least – military authorities changed their attitude to the language issue over the course of the war from generally indifferent or class-dependent in 1914 to overtly German-nationalist views held by large segments of the officer corps in 1918, and how this influenced their own morale and sense of loyalty. While asking how much this process owed to pre-war nationalist politics, the chapter argues that what resulted was a strengthened group identity based on the use of Czech as a primary tool of group identification, both by the speakers and the others.
