This paper discusses the use of topographic analysis of ceramic vessel surfaces and variability in wall thickness to identify pottery-forming methods. It builds on a paper in which we addressed this issue by analysing horizontal sections. In this study, we have focused our attention on the area calculation of the relevant phenomena on the 3D representation of the surfaces of vessels. The aim was to improve the approach's applicability to fragmentary archaeological pottery. An experimental dataset of forming methods with different ways of applying rotational motion was used for the analysis. The forming methods included in this dataset can be reliably distinguished based on surface root mean square height (Sq) measured on the outer surface and circular standard deviation (CSD) of the orientation of the relief created by subtracting the outer and inner surfaces of the vessel using at least 900 mm2 (30 × 30 mm) of ceramic vessel surface area.
