Gang Violence and Drug Abuse Prevalence Among Youths: A Strain Theory and Political Economy Analysis
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The crusade against crime and violence, to the extent of terrorism and war, cannot be won without first winning the war against drug abuse. Several crimes are propelled by the abuse of drugs by the perpetrators. This is common among young adults. Several lives had been destroyed due to the abuse of drugs and other substances. Drugs are used as stimulants to psychologically propel individuals to do what they would not have done ordinarily. Several gangs depend on drugs and stimulants to incite them to commit crimes. Despite government policies against the abuse of drugs, state actors and non-state actors are couriers of these drugs. What is the political economy of drug abuse, and how does drug abuse propel gang violence? Strain theory explains the reasons why youths or gangs engage in drug abuse and the aftermath of drug abuse, which is violence perpetration. Data from UNODC are used to ascertain drug abuse across countries and gang violence. In contrast, WHO data are used to determine the effect of drug abuse on people and gang-related violence. The research concludes that gang violence will remain prominent until stiffer punitive measures are meted out on the perpetrators.
