Morphological, colour and behavioural mimicry of cuckoo bees by the hoverfly Eumerus tricolor (Fabricius) (Diptera: Syrphidae)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The hoverfly Eumerus tricolor (Fabricius) is morphologically very similar to the females of cuckoo bees of the genus Sphecodes Latreille and it was observed in two localities in central (Čertoryje NNR, Czech Republic) and south (Kladhas, Greece) Europe together with parasitising females of these cuckoo bees on nest sites of their bee hosts of the genus Lasioglossum Curtis. Females of E. tricolor were sitting on the ground, slowly flying low over the ground and walking on the nesting site, which can be interpreted as Batesian mimicry of Sphecodes. This species is the only European hoverfly of this genus coloured very similarly to Sphecodes and it also prefers warm and sunny hilly slopes and/or rocky steppes, where Sphecodes cuckoo bees are often abundant. Within the red and black coloured hoverflies, E. tricolor is the only species showing this behaviour and using not only the mimicry of general appearance but also behavioural mimicry.
