The protection of areas is one of the most important instruments of modern anticipatory strategies in nature conservation and planning for sustainable spatial development. Two examples of areas with a necessity of nature protection were introduced in theCzech Republic. Šumava Mountains are situated along the border among the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. The length of mountains is about 120 kilometres, from valleyOn the Šumava ridge goes the main European watershed between Black Sea and North Sea. At the Bavarian and Austrian side the mountains fall intensive, at the Czech side dip slowly. Untouched nature, deep forests, pure streams, fair climate, number of nature trails - these are the characteristics of Novohradské hory, the area on the south of the Czech Republic, suitable for various kinds of tourist activities.
