Der Eiserne Vorhang teilte Europa mehr als 40 Jahre lang auf einer Linie von der Barentssee bis zum Schwarzen Meer bzw. zur Adria. Er war eine politische, ideologische und gleichzeitig auch physische Barriere, die den ganzen europäischen Kontinent zerschnitt. Das Gebiet entlang der Grenze war für Menschen praktisch unzugänglich, und seine Nutzung war sehr extensiv, wenn es sie überhaupt gab. Der Einzige, der durch die Existenz dieser Grenze gewinnen konnte, war in ihrem unmittelbaren Umfeld die Natur. In der offenen Landschaft können Grüne Bänder Netze von Biokorridoren bilden. Diese sind ein wichtiges Strukturelement von Territorialsystemen für die ökologische Stabilität der Landschaft. Die Projektmethodik der Kartierung entstand aus der visuellen Interpretation von ortho-rektifizierten Luftbildern, weiteren digitalen Kartenunterlagen des Gebiets und Geländeerhebungen. Die Klassen von CORINE wurden zur Grundlage des Klassifikationssystems gemacht.

The Iron courtain dividend Eastern and Western Europe for almou 40 years cutting off contacts between people on both sides. Nature seized the deserted border areas. Today a string of beutiful habitats with rare plants and animals connects Europe?s landscapes and forms a living monument of European history. To preserve the Green Belt as the backbone of an ecological network, running from the Barents Sea to the Black sea, as a living monument and as a global symbol for transboundary cooperation in natureconservation and sustainable development. According to the analysis of the protection system along the Green Belt, the results of the classification were vector digized in geographic information system as a segmented borderline with identified CORINE classes and protection status assigned to the segments.
