Belief functions have been investigated since more than 20 years as a mathematical tool for uncertainty quantification and processing which extends, but also alternates the classical ones based on probability theory and math.statistics. The formalized tools offered by the apparatus of probability theory, and measure theory in general, are used in order to analyze belief functions in more detail and to introduce some generalizations inspired by the ideas of signed measures and nonstandard probabilities.
