This is a chapter from the two-volume compendium Viertel B. (ed.) Anuran larvae - Morphology, Anatomy, Development, Function, Ecology, Evolution, published by Edition Chimaira, Frankfurt am Main. It summarises all fossil records of anuran larvae known worldwide before the end of 2022 and is arranged according to the currently accepted classification of anuran amphibians. As the term anuran larva ('tadpole') is used in a general sense to refer to all developmental stages between hatching and completion of metamorphosis into an adult frog, the developmental stages have been arranged according to the so-called normal tables of anuran development. Almost all anatomical descriptions are based on first-hand observations. The aim of this chapter is to present data on the ontogeny of fossil and, in some cases, completely extinct anuran taxa, thus providing a means of comparison with extant taxa.
