Three technologies which enable complex decontamination of soils contaminated by oraganic substances, namely PCBs, have been put into practise in the Czech Republic and are currently oprating. The process of thermal desorption of organic substances containe in solis takes place in an inert mitrogen atmosphere= in which the soil is heated to a temperature ranging from 100 to 480oC.The evaporated organic substances are condensed in the form of water emulsion.The condensate is subsequently decontaminated by chemical decomposition process based on the reaction with aactive hydroxyl radicals generated by ultraviolet radiation after addition of hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst.The organic phase can be simultaneously deconatminatd by dehalogenation of PCB based on the suspension of metallic sodium.
