Recent findings showed that some species didn't respond to the Quaternary climate change by distribution shifts southwards. Instead, the ability of species to survive in 'northern' refugia becomes important. Our genetic study of bank voles in the Carpathians added weight to this concept and provided the clearest phylogeographic evidence to date of a northern glacial refugium for temperate species in Europe.
