Dynamics of the biotopes at the edge of a medieval town: pollen analysis of Vltava river sediments in Prague, Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
As part of a rescue archaeological excavation in Valdštejnská Street in the Lesser Town of Prague, flood sediments of an old channel of the river Vltava were studied. Pollen analysis was made from a core taken before the archaeological research and fromarchaeological layers uncovered later. The core represents the era that followed construction of weirs in the second half of the 13th century, and its upper part dates up to approximately the 15th century. Some of the analysed archaeological layers are older, and belong to Early Medieval times (the oldest excavated situation was dated to the end of the 10th century). For the pollen analysis, three types of sediment were studied: flood loams, cultural layers and material deposited in causeways. Pollen spectra in each particular sediment type are very specific, which was also confirmed by multivariate statistical analyses. Thanks to the sedimentary diversity we were able to evaluate the broader vegetational context of the site.
