Bei der Erforschung der keltischen Oppida bleiben eine Menge ungeklärter Fragen. Eine der möglichen Ursachen des unbefriedigenden Forschungsstandes besteht darin, dass die Oppida nur im gegenseitigen Vergleich bewertet bzw. mit antiken oder hochmittelalterlichen Städten verglichen werden. Dabei wurden z. B. Raumanalyse und Gegenüberstellung von Burgwällen aus anderen vor- und frühgeschichtlichen Zeiträumen bisher nicht vorgenommen. Der Beitrag widmet sich erst der Verteilung der Oppida im West- und Ostkeltischen Kreis. Dabei wurde festgestellt, dass die Menge und räumliche Verteilung von Oppida in beiden Gebieten völlig unterschiedlich ist. Davon wurde abgeleitet, dass diese Einrichtungen in beiden Kreisen verschiedene Funktionen erfüllten. Weiters wurde die Verteilung von Oppida und frühmittelalterlichen Burgwällen im Raum von Böhmen ausgewertet. Die Analyse beider Befestigungsformen hat erbracht, dass zwischen ihnen grundsätzliche Unterschiede bestehen, es also anzunehmen ist, dass sie unterschiedliche Funktionen erfüllten. Bei einem Vergleich mit den Oppida des Stammes der Biturigen in Mittelgallien hat es sich gezeigt, dass die dortigen Oppida den böhmischen frühmittelalterlichen Burgwällen näher stehen als den böhmischen Oppida. Wahrscheinlich haben sie auch eine ähnliche Rolle gespielt, die sich von jener der böhmischen Oppida unterscheidet.

In research about Celtic oppida, many questions still remain unanswered. One possible reason for the unsatisfactory state of research may be that oppida have only been assessed in comparison with each other, or with classical or high medieval cities. Comparisons with e.g. spatial analyses of other defended hilltop settlements have not yet been conducted. This contribution assesses the distribution of oppida in the western and eastern Celtic World. It is observed that the number and spatial distribution of oppida in those two different regions is entirely different. That has led to the conclusion that these sites fulfilled different functions in those two different areas. Also, the distribution of oppida and early medieval hillforts in Bohemia was assessed and compared. The analysis of these two forms of defensive architecture shows fundamental differences between them, leading to the assumption that they also fulfilled different functions. A comparison with the oppida of the tribe of the Bituriges in Central Gaul demonstrates that these are more closely comparable to the Bohemian early medieval hillforts than the Bohemian oppida. Thus, they probably had a similar role, which differs from that of the Bohemian oppida.
