In Böhmen sind gegenwärtig 22 Fundstellen von Siedlungen mit einer verhältnismäßig sicher datierten Befestigung aus der älteren und beginnenden mittleren Bronzezeit bekannt. Die Fundstellen können in zwei Typen untergliedert werden, und zwar in Flachland- und Höhensiedlungen (Burgwälle). Beispielhaft für beiden Typen werden die Fundstellen in Brandýs nad Labem-Vrábí (Flachlandsiedlung) und Vrcovice (Höhensiedlung) näher erläutert. Die übrigen Fundstellen aus Böhmen werden stichwortartig ebenfalls aufgeführt. Die meisten Fundstellen datieren erst ins Ende der frühen bzw. an den Anfang der mittleren Bronzezeit, mit einigen ist aber schon für die Zeit kurz nach 2000 v. Chr. zu rechnen. Die Liste der befestigten Fundstellen ist sicher nicht vollständig und entspricht daher nicht der ursprünglichen Realität. Vor allem bei den während der Vor- und Frühgeschichte wiederholt befestigten Anlagen ist die Identifizierung der frühbronzezeitlichen Befestigungen erschwert, genauso bei Fundstellen in Waldgebieten bzw. in landwirtschaftlich intensiv genutzten Regionen. Die Problematik der Erhaltung und Datierung der Befestigungen wird am Beispiel Südböhmens näher vorgestellt.

Twenty-two fortified settlements whose fortifications can be dated with relative certainty to the Early Bronze Age and the early Middle Bronze Age are known so far in Bohemia. The sites in question can be divided into two types: fortified lowland sites and fortified hill-top sites (hillforts). The sites at Brandýs nad Labem-Vrábí (lowland fortification) and Vrcovice (hill-top fortification) may serve as examples of the two types. A list of the other sites is also provided. Most of the sites date from no earlier than the end of the Early or the start of the Middle Bronze Age. A few sites, however, may date from as early as shortly after 2000 BC. The list of fortified sites is certainly incomplete and does not reflect the true historical situation. Where sites have been repeatedly fortified in the course of pre- and proto-history, it is difficult to identify the fortifications dating from the Early Bronze Age, and sites situated in forested areas or areas that have been intensively farmed are also hard to identify. The problems associated with the preservation and dating of these fortified sites are illustrated by the example of southern Bohemia.
