Early medieval depictions of falconry from eastern Central Europe in the 8th-9th centuries
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The text analyses the most important and earliest depictions of falconry found in eastern Central Europe: Moravský Svätý Ján, Staré Město and eastern Austria (all depictions of humans with birds). A decoration from Želénky (of a quarry being attacked by a bird of prey) - which could also reflect human-initiated falconry - is analysed, too. These depictions are set within the context of our knowledge regarding societies on their way to being early states. The strap end of a belt from Moravský Svätý Ján (end of the 8th century) is decorated with a depiction of a man wearing a headband (shown in profile), with his left hand raised as he releases a bird of prey, probably a falcon. The silver ornament from Staré Město depicts a bareheaded, beardless rider with a bird of prey sitting on his left hand, it was found in the grave of a juvenile woman buried inside a church in the 9th century. The square-shaped silver, partially gilded, decoration from a female grave in a large barrow in Želénky (9th century) shows a bird of prey with outstretched wings that is just about to attack the back of a deer, digging its talons into it. Even though the scenes were inspired by Byzantine (or, more precisely, from a periphery of Byzantium) or Mediterranean art, the art of falconry was already practised in Bohemia and Moravia as can be evidenced by bones of birds of prey found at contemporary fortified strongholds and in villages in their hinterland (Mutěnice). All decorations were used as demonstrative symbols of the social significance of their bearers.
