How to build a national ecosystem of digital services for archaeology – lessons learned in the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
For decades, Czech archaeology has been gradually digitizing the field, but the breakthrough was brought about by the establishment of the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR), a large research infrastructure for archaeological data. Today, it forms the backbone of field research activities in Czechia, providing a wide range of tools, supporting various user communities, serving as a hub for disseminating best practices and a gateway to collaboration with foreign countries. The presentation will summarize the obstacles that had to be overcome in the creation of such a large-scale system, how the professional community was convinced to share data, and how it was possible to use the digital environment to engage citizen science and to start overcoming long-unresolved difficulties (eg. regarding metal detecting). AIS CR demonstrates in practice how digitization, openness and following FAIR principles can contribute to an change in the handling of disciplinary data, helping to integrate the sector and bring science closer to the broadest public. It is building trust in a stable team and its open communication that together lead to changes in the entire disciplinary environment, while simultaneously increasing the potential of data for reproducible scientific research and solid culture heritage management.
