Neolithic quarrying and archaeological excavations at the Jistebsko site in the Jizerské Hory Mountains

One of the most important sources of raw stone materials for the Early Neolithic in Central Europe – the Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) metabasite – is located on the edge of the Jizera Mountains (North Bohemia, Czech Republic). This rock was extensively quarried here and processed into semi-finished products throughout the entire period of the Linear Pottery Culture. The best preserved traces of quarrying can be found on the Maršovický vrch Hill in the Jistebsko village, where 25 ha of intact contexts with quarring pits, dumps, and production workshops with fireplaces have been preserved. The overview of the excavations carried out so far can be seen in this article. The scale of extraction and the amount of production waste is equivalent to many hundreds of thousands of semi-finished products, which travelled up to 500 km through extensive distribution networks.
